Start with simple patterns
When you first start crocheting, you will want to choose an easy pattern to follow. Great places to find easy patterns are places like YouTube. Pinterest, and Etsy. Try to make a granny square or washcloth for your first project. Patterns where you need to change the type of stitch you are doing or the color of yarn you are using are going to be more difficult.
Pay attention to the type of yarn you use
Each yarn skein should have a label that describes its “weight.” This ranges in number from 1 (superfine yarn great for making small or thin items) and 7 (jumbo yarn for projects that will be very very bulky). The pattern you choose to follow should tell you what weight yarn you should use. Following the instructions provided in your pattern on hook and yarn size is essential to making your project look exactly like the final product of the pattern you are following.
Choose quality crochet hooks in a variety of sizes
The more you crochet you will realize the quality of the hook you use makes a huge difference. You will also notice that for each pattern or item you decide to make, you will need a specific size crochet hook to make that pattern. Crochet hooks are measured in millimeters and by letter. Choose a set of crochet hooks that have both sizes labeled on them so you will know which one to use for any pattern you want!
A great option for beginner crochet hooks can be found HERE. It even includes a case and a few stitch markers which you will need for some projects.
Know how you learn best
When I first started crocheting, I learned through watching YouTube videos. Being able to see how someone does the specific stitch or goes through making the whole pattern made it so much easier for me than trying to read a written pattern. Once you get more experience with different stitches, you will likely be able to follow a written pattern much easier. This is what worked for me, but take your learning style into consideration when searching for patterns.
Don’t give up!
This is probably the most valuable advice from this whole post! Learning to crochet takes lots of time! It took me lots of trial and error to become really good at the craft. Don’t be discouraged if your first project isn’t perfect. Even as an experienced crocheter, I often have to restart my projects because they just aren’t turning out the way I want them to, and that’s okay!
I hope these tips were helpful to you as you begin your journey becoming a crocheter! Don’t forget to share this post so others are able to learn from these helpful tips.
