Being a young adult, it feels like every other week I have friends or family buying homes or moving into new apartments. I pride myself in always wanting to be the best gift-giver and housewarming gifts are no exception to that. Even if you make the search ‘housewarming gifts’ so many options will pop up and it can be not only confusing, but also overwhelming to choose the perfect gift! I’ve compiled this list of 20 of my favorite housewarming gifts for the next time you have the need to purchase the favorite gift. As you explore these options, think of the person you’ll be buying for and what they may like or need.

1. A Basic Home Tool Kit
This is something the new homeowner probably never thought about purchasing beforehand but will certainly come in handy as they need to make little repairs or even to hang up decor. There are several affordable options online to purchase one, plus it’s a housewarming gift that will be useful for years to come! I purchased one when I moved into my first rental and am still using the same one about five years later.
2. Freezer Meals
Let’s face it, moving is stressful! The last thing the new homeowner will want to think of is what they will be making for meals in the first few days of living in their new space. Freezer meals are so useful as you will be able to prep these ahead of time and all your loved one will need to do is pop them in the oven before enjoying dinner. This is something I really wish I would have had when I moved into my first house. Not only for the convenient piece of it, but I would have saved so much money not eating out!
Below is a link to a blog post on some really awesome freezer meal ideas.
3. Decor Pieces Perfect for the New Home
One of my most favorite housewarming gifts I received was a piece of decor with a homely quote on it! I didn’t have much decor when I first moved into my house so it was nice to have something to hang on the wall. Plus, it’s a great way to remind the person moving into the new home that they have your well wishes and hope for the best within their four walls.
Some housewarming decor with new home quotes are linked below.
4. Custom House Photo from Etsy
Etsy is a great place to find unique and personalized decor specific to whoever you’re shopping for! If you have the time to wait for something handmade it can be a heartfelt option for the new homeowner in your life. There are several options out there, from a watercolor print of their new home, to personalized prints of their names, it’s a housewarming gift that will surely stand out.
5. High Quality Pots & Pans
Especially if this is a new homeowner, they probably don’t have much for cookware. Pots and pans can become really expensive. Now, you don’t need to spend an arm and a leg, but by purchasing a few nice pieces, you’ll be purchasing a gift the homeowner will get years of use from! Plus, it will be one less necessity for the new homeowner to purchase right away when moving into their new home.
6. Plants…
… specifically a money tree! Chinese legend says this type of houseplant will bring money and good fortune. What a better way to give your well wishes to the new homeowner! Gift them a money tree with a little note explaining the Chinese legend. I think this is a super cute idea!
Some other great options for house plants to gift are: snake plants, spider plants, and peace lilies! I have all three of these plants and they’re very low maintenance but add the perfect amount of greenery to my home.
If you need to dress up a plant you’ve purchased, put it in an adorable pot the new homeowner will enjoy for years to come.
7. Customized Cutting Board
Every homeowner needs a cutting board. A customized one that’s made specifically to gift for this housewarming is something your loved one will get tons of use from. Not only can they be used for decor, they’re functional too!
Many websites offer personalized cutting board options along with several other options to customize kitchen utensils. My favorite of these options is Etsy! Many items on this site are handmade, which in my opinion gives the gift a little extra of a personal touch.
8. Personalized Door Mat
Whether serious or funny, door mats are the perfect housewarming gift! This is one of my favorite ideas because there are so many options out there you can really choose one to fit your loved one’s personality!
Some of my favorite silly doormats are linked below.
9. A Dutch Oven
For the foodie in your life, a dutch oven is essential! I put off getting one for a few years because honestly, they can be a little pricy! I finally got one when I was gifted one at Christmas and I’ve gotten so much use out of it!
For an extra little gift you can also add a dutch oven recipe book to this gift your loved one will be getting use out of for years to come!
10. Small Appliances
Especially for someone who has never lived on their own before, purchasing small appliances can be a huge help. You don’t even have to stick with the basics of toasters and air fryers. While those are good options and appliances the new homeowner will get use out of, you can choose something a little more unique.
This may include a smaller blender (perfect for making individual smoothies and milkshakes), waffle iron, or even a panini press! Personally, these are items I waited to purchase because they were lower priority, but now that I have them I use them all the time!
11. Candles or a Wax Warmer
Fill their new home with your favorite scents! This is a really good option if you know the person really well and know what kind of smells they prefer to fill their home with. If you’re not sure, choose something light and airy, like a ‘fresh linen’ smell!
Pair this with a candle holder, a cute wax warmer, or wax melts and you have the perfect housewarming gift!
12. A Set of Kitchen Spices
This is the perfect housewarming gift for someone who really enjoys cooking! Especially if you’re able to find a blend of several different unique seasoning blends. A really great option to pair with this is a spice organizer!
Otherwise, basic everyday seasonings are perfect gifts and fillers for baskets. Seasonings like onion powder, garlic powder, chili powder, and salt or pepper grinders will be sure to set your loved one up for success in the kitchen!
13. A Cocktail Shaker Set
When moving into your first place, buying a cocktail shaker is low on the priority list. However, as you settle in and want to entertain some friends for a night it’s pretty essential! I love the little cocktail bar sets you can find online in several different styles. While I just have a basic cocktail shaker, I’d love to receive one of these cocktail shaker sets as a gift!
14. Your Favorite Recipe Book
There’s very few better options for heartfelt gifts than sharing your favorite recipes as a housewarming gift. I prefer to gift recipe books of comfort food items, however this is something easily personalized to whoever you’re gifting it too!
Really any category of food or cooking item has a cookbook to go with it! If this is someone living on their own for the first time, a big recipe book of basic recipes is the best option. When I first moved into my home, I purchased one of the massive Better Homes & Gardens cookbooks and have made so many recipes from it!
Some other really great options are here:
15. Bath Supplies
If the person you’re shopping for is really into self-care, put together a gift basket with some of your favorite bath supplies! Personally for these gifts I like to choose bubble baths, bath bombs, bath salts, face masks, and lotions. The options are endless.
You can also add in things like loofahs, fuzzy socks, and washcloths.
This is something you can make into a really affordable option. Dollar Tree has some amazing bath supplies for a really low price. However, if you’re looking for something more convenient, you can always purchase a pre-made bath gift online.
16. Towel Sets
Towels are one of those things everyone needs but nobody wants to spend money on (in my opinion)! The towels I’m using I’ve had for years. They still do the job but I’d never complain about receiving new ones. There are many options for towel sets online to choose from. Certain stores often have really good deals on towels too, such as Sam’s Club and Kohls.
17. A Set of Coasters
When I first moved out by myself I quickly realized I didn’t have a nice set of coasters! There are so many options out there for unique coaster sets to really personalize it to the homeowner you’re shopping for. Whether you’re looking for a handmade option (Etsy is perfect for this again) or a novelty coaster set found online, this housewarming gift is sure to get plenty of use.
18. Wine & Wine Glasses
If you know you’re loved one is a wine drinker, get them their favorite bottle of wine along with some wine glasses! I personally prefer stemless wine glasses as they take up way less storage space and there are several unique shape and color options easily found online.
Don’t forget to include a wine bottle opener if you don’t think they have one yet!
19. Gift Cards
If you’re really not sure what to get but you want to help out in a monetary way, gift cards are the best option!
Home improvement stores are perfect to give gift cards to because chances are the new homeowner is going to want to do small updates or painting right off the bat! You can also choose gift cards from Amazon, Walmart, or Target because these stores offer a variety of things the homeowner can choose from.
Grocery store gift cards are perfect for your loved one to stock up on food in their new home. Restaurant gift cards are also perfect so the homeowner won’t have to cook while settling in to their new space!
20. A Pre-made Housewarming Basket
When all else fails, there are several great options online for housewarming baskets perfect for gift giving. If you’re looking for convenience but you still want to give a heartfelt gift, a pre-made basket is a perfect option. Color coordinated and full of small gifts, a gift basket is pleasing to the eye, and useful too! Plus, you can always add your own small trinkets to the mix!
This list of 20 of my favorite housewarming gift ideas has been so incredibly fun for me to put together. These are all ideas I would have loved to receive when I purchased my new home! If you need more ideas, I encourage you to talk to the new homeowner to see what things they’ll need for their new space. It may be something really basic, but something that will help them tremendously if they need it!
